Vitamin D and Covid-19
Please Note: Vitamin D is essential for a functioning immune system. The updated blood level of Vitamin D should be 80 – 100 ng/ml for optimum health. Please, consider your weight, age, sun exposure, and skin tone when choosing a dose of D3 and take it with a fatty meal.
See the video below where Dr John Campbell interviews a top vitamin D researcher for a complete explanation.
Based on Independent Scientific Studies:
- All high risk groups for Covid-19 are also high risk for D deficiency. These include people who do not get enough sun, darker skinned people, those with a BMI over 35, and the elderly.
- Sufficient vitamin D levels prevent most cases of severe illness and death from Covid-19 and many other infections.
- Serum 25(OH)D is the test; the level must be at least 50 ng/ml.
- Vitamin D levels should be corrected with D3 supplements.
- The dose depends on the individual, so testing must be done.
- According to CDC information, most of us are low in vitamin D.
- Our main source of D3 is made on our skin when exposed to the sun.
- Food is not a significant source, so supplements are usually needed.
- D3 is converted to an essential hormone that works on every cell in your body.
- D3 helps your immune system fight off Covid-19 and many other infections, and reduces your chance of some cancers, Type 2 Diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and heart disease.
- Supplements are inexpensive and widely available.
- There are rare cases of overdosing on D when very high doses are taken over a period of months. Testing is important to prevent this mistake.
- Few people cannot process D3 or are hypersensitive to it. It is still needed for your health, so if this is an issue, an endocrinologist should be consulted.

Handout for Aged Care October Age and an indoor lifestyle put residents at risk for D deficiency and illness. In New Zealand, all residents of aged care homes qualify for free vitamin D supplements, which resolve the deficiencies for 98.5% of those residents who receive it.
Handout for Darker Skin October The skin, when exposed to the sun makes vitamin D3. Pigment in our skin protects us from sun damage, but also slows the production of Vitamin D.

Ask Your Doctor to Test.
Some doctors have already been testing and correcting deficient Vitamin D levels. In light of new information about the risk and prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, all patients should be tested and corrective measures taken. There are no representatives from industry visiting doctors to promote vitamin D, since there is no financial gain in selling it. We must be proactive and ask our doctors for the test.
About Other Supplements
Research has shown that D is the most significant factor in the fight against Covid-19. Vitamin D works with other nutrients, such as Vitamin K2 and Magnesium, so those supplements would also be beneficial. Other nutrients such as Vitamin C and zinc have also shown some effectiveness. In general, research does not focus on natural nutrients because they do not make money for the pharmaceutical industry.
